After update to Windows 10, I tried to use the SCAN option in PHOTOED.EXE, a Microsoft program. The Acquisition error states that Photo Editor has detected an older version of Twain and that Photo Editor should be reinstalled. My version of PHOTOED is dated 12/15/2000. I copied it forward from Vista Home Premium and it worked fine on Windows 8.1. I cannot find a new version of Photo Editor to install for Windows 10 that includes the TWAIN scanner. I am able to scan with other software, but not directly from the PHOTOED.EXE. This results in extra steps to scan and reload the new document so that it can be edited in the Photo Editor. Is there a solution to update and reactivate the TWAIN driver in the PHOTOED program?

The main reason your Twain stopped working is compatibility with the latest version of Windows. As far as I know, Windows 10 requires new drivers and updates for old applications to work properly.

This means you will need an updated TWAIN driver for Windows to recognize your scanner to acquire images.

Also Microsoft Office Photo Editor is an old application that doesn't have support for Windows 10 operating system.

Try using VueScan as a scanning alternative, and an image editor that's supported by Windows 10: http://software.informer.com/search/image+editor

Is this freeware software or do people pay for this? Is it available for upgrade and patched routinely every week for security flaws? Does this replace the Photo Editor in Office 2010?

This application won't work on Windows 7. It was released for previous versions of Windows, however, you can install an advanced version of it using the new photo editor available through Windows Live Essentials.

The application's name is know known as Photo Gallery: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/photo-gallery

When I open Microsoft Photo Editor on Windows 10, I get "No file format information can be found in the registry". How can I fix this problem? I am desperate.

Microsoft Office Photo Editor is an application that was available in the Office 97–XP versions which means it's not compatible with the Windows 10 operating system. However, the only thing you can try is a compatibility tweak. Locate the executable file and right click it. Choose Properties > Compatibility and then tick the Run as Administrator option. Launch it again and with a bit of luck it should work properly.
